What differs is the physical immigration hall layout and typical congestion: Terminal 1 serves full-service international carriers and tends to have more counters and gates relative to its passenger volume, while klia2 handles very high volumes of low-cost carrier traffic (AirAsia and others) and can see longer queues at peak arrival banks, particularly early morning and late evening.

At a manned counter, an immigration officer scans your passport, which pulls up your pre-submitted MDAC record automatically. You may be asked a small number of verification questions (purpose of visit, length of stay, accommodation), your passport is stamped, and you proceed to baggage claim.

At an eligible autogate (part of Malaysia's broader e-gate and MACS — Malaysia Automated Clearance System — infrastructure), you scan your passport's biometric chip, the system cross-checks your face or fingerprint against the chip and your MDAC record, and the gate opens automatically with no officer interaction needed. The whole process typically takes under 30 seconds once you're at the gate.

Even if your nationality is on the eligible list, autogate access generally requires a one-time biometric enrollment completed at a manned counter on your first visit — this registers your fingerprint or facial biometric against your passport in Malaysia's system.
